vague recap of the recent past

// 2007.08.30 20:24 //

I never did recap the past weekend or the week of the Danskin Triathlon. There were pictures of the triathlon at least. It was very very wet. We had sushi with Eve and Karl at Mashiko last weekend. I have not had sushi in quite a while. We watched Ice Pirates with them afterwards. Now there’s a type of movie that isn’t made anymore. Amanda also had brunch with Nancy and Carrie; I apparently was not invited. She and Carrie went shopping afterwards and brought two tea mugs back home for me. Sweet! I recall us going to Tukwila for various shopping errands, too. Exciting.
I have found the latest version of Movable Type (the weblogging software) to be slightly buggy and annoying, but at least the weblogs are functional now. I stopped uploading pictures to the gallery because I found a bug/undesired quirk in the way my “Life in Pictures” albums are being generated. I need to fix that, but it will take an unknown time.
Amanda has been on nights for the Family Medicine Service. The beginning of the week was rather shocking, as while she got paged occasionally, she did not really have to go in. Last night was pretty harsh, though, and she will be there all night tonight as well.
Amanda finally told one of her fellow residents (Heather) that she was expecting the other day. They were at the hospital for another person’s delivery last Tuesday. Although Amanda was the night float person, Heather wanted to stay because it was her clinic patient, so I picked Amanda up and took her back home. Two other residents arrived afterwards and asked how the laboring patient was, and Heather said something like “she’s fine, but guess who’s pregnant!” Amanda did tell Heather it was OK to tell other people, and I guess Heather wasted no time. At the first year residents’ retreat/picnic at Seward Park the very next day (the other years were also invited), apparently everyone already knew. Funny.
Maybe we should tell our neighbors. I think one might suspect.
In other neighbor news, Julie and Ian got married. Billy and Heather are getting married this weekend.
Amanda has a long weekend. I think she was on Jeopardy this Sunday and Monday, but she said she got someone (Dave?) to cover for her… Jeopardy meaning she has to cover other people in emergencies. She wants to get out of the city and relax (not in another city). I did some investigation, and places on the Olympic Peninsula and Oregon coast are booked solid. It is a holiday weekend after all. Had things been otherwise, we could have gone wine tasting, but obviously that activity is verboten. Amanda was thinking about camping, but I dunno about that.
Miyumi at the gym asked about my training today. I am supposed to be training for a half marathon at the beginning of October in Bellingham, along with others from the gym, but, um, that has not been happening. I still have more than a month, though.

reading material

// 2007.08.29 00:53 //

For the last few weeks, I have been reading Pride and Prejudice over and over before going to bed; I have probably read it through three or four times recently. Amanda has been continuously reading Lolita. What does this all mean?

bangbang

// 2007.08.28 10:25 //

We woke up to the sound of gunshots and squealing tires. Ah, life in the big city. Like usual, it sounded like they were right outside the house, but in reality they could be anywhere as sound carries pretty far in our area. In last night’s case, we then heard many many sirens (also not unusual since Rainier is a main road), but they stopped this time nearby. There were many people milling about outside the Dakota, the apartment building across the field from us, so I thought someone was shot there, but they could have also outside looking at the lunar eclipse. I consulted Seattle’s realtime 911 calls on the net, and it was unclear exactly where the shooting occurred.
The Seattle PI reported this morning that three people were shot along Rainier Avenue within a few blocks from us, although it is unclear where it all occurred as all three were found in different places, and one has died of head wounds. As one might expect, it was not believed to be a “random shooting”.
On a more relaxed note, Amanda managed to stay at home all night otherwise, although she was paged a lot. Now we are waiting for the coffeecake to finish baking. Piglet is out having adventures.

test post-upgrade entry

// 2007.08.27 14:06 //

After an interlude of work, I got back to upgrading the weblog, and fixed various things. I admit I upgraded without much thought or planning other than verify I had backups of everything. All this is personal, after all.
Amanda was in clinic this morning and thought she had the afternoon off, but she discovered that she was actually on call starting at noon because of an oddity of the call schedule (I think the person before her had to leave because of either the 30 hour shift limit or the 8 hour limit between shifts). She is hopeful that she can come home later, but she is still on nights for the rest of the week.
I put piglet piglet back on her wet food diet, although after getting new prescription wet food ($$$!) I briefly considered keeping her on the dry stuff. I hope she will start to lose weight again, but I think she is supplementing her diet on her own when she marauds outside.
We saw a couple of crows in the middle of 36th Ave in what appeared to be a mating ritual this morning when I drove Amanda to her clinic. “Get out of the road!” said Amanda to the (presumably) male crow. “She isn’t interested.”
