I went to the King County Department of Vital Statistics today to try to correct Lonan Kai’s birth certificate. I do not actually have a copy of it, but I know it must be wrong because we have been getting a lot of mail with his last name spelled incorrectly (such as his Social Security card). Which I planned on fixing today as well. This problem is in addition to other name manglings that have occurred. Of course, it is hard to prove who you are when your birth certificate itself is wrong, so that must be fixed first. As a parent, apparently I can simply change the name on the birth certificate since it is within some time period and I was merely changing the last name to a parent’s name.
I did not have to prove my identification, however. Weird.
There was at least a day’s turnaround time since the correction had to be done/approved/whatever in Olympia, so I could not deal with his other name problems yet.

still alive really

I was on my way home from work on I405 South yesterday when I was almost wiped out by a barrel that escaped from a truck directly in front of me. It seemed to float toward me very slowly as the usual time dilation effects occurred (“like the moment when your brakes lock / and you slide towards the big truck / you stretch the frozen moments with your fear” — Pink Floyd), but I was able to unconsciously perform an evasive maneuver via the right shoulder. I looked back and the following vehicles flowed around it like water in a river. Hopefully no one hit it later. I normally avoid questionably laden vehicles, but in this case I had to get ready to exit onto I90 West.
Crisis averted! I am sure I survived due to copious video game playing in my past, so I should get Lonan Kai started soon in spite of Amanda’s objections.
Back home, Lonan had a mini meltdown that I managed to quell, and then Heather and Andrew came over with dinner for us. It was great to see them. Lonan Kai was well behaved (i.e. sleeping) during the visit. Later I berated Lonan for his gluttonous eating and purging, but then realized I had four servings of dinner myself.
Many people have brought us dinner recently, and I have unfortunately have not immortalized them all here. Thanks all!

insurance

Stuff has been happening, but alas there has been no time for weblog entries. But we were perusing Amanda’s bill of services from Group Health and saw that her epidural cost almost $5000. Crazy (well, not really, but it’s always fun to say that as medical comp is a complex beast). I suppose it would have cost more if she had not gotten it 24 hours into her labor since it had both run and fallen out. Of course, her plan through Group Health is very good, I think the whole delivery cost us directly $400-$600.
This reminds me that I have to get my catastrophic insurance squared away.

lonan weblog

// 2008.03.13 14:56 //

Amanda wanted another weblog for Lonan Kai, so I created one a few days ago. It is password protected for various reasons, but since it doesn’t matter much at this point, I am am going to post the access information here. One needs the username and password, which are “lonankai” and “ilovepiglet” respectively. All lowercase. I imagine there is some password harverster out there that will pick that info up. Ah, well.

dentist

// 2008.03.12 16:46 // ,

I went to the dentist today. It was fun, as routine dental visits are when pain, injections, pliers, and whatnot are not involved. Now my teeth are absurdly clean and as usual I have vowed to floss everyday again.

I got to see Sumi again. I believe she has the run of most places in the office. I noted that there are cat-sized openings in many of the doors.

In this picture she is disgruntled because I did not let her out when I entered the waiting area (which does not have a cat door). After a bit she spent much time sniffing my boots and pants before escaping when another person entered the room.
