hunger as a motivating force

// 2011.06.28 08:38 //

We got a hanging chicken feeder a while ago, and installed it in the chicken run a few days ago. The chickens, being kinda dumb, did not know what it was for, and were very hungry for a couple of days; I had removed the old feeder. This morning they finally figured out what it was for. Huzzah!

sunday monday

2011 JUN 26 : SUNDAY
Amanda went to pick up her mom from work in the morning since we borrowed her car the night before to go to our respective parties. We then had bfast at Geraldine’s Counter.

Afterwards, we went out to the zoo and met up with AC-MC family and also AD-R and progeny (who had moved her very recently and are friends with one of Amanda’s high school friends and who we first met at Amanda’s bday party). The weather was very nice and we ended up staying at the zoo for the longest time ever. From 9:30am to 2pm maybe?

After Kai nap we thought about going to the Space Needle since we have to use a free admission before the end of the week, but the zoo trip fatigued us, so we just stayed home and had AC-MC and Amanda’s mom over for a pizza dinner.

2011 JUN 27 : MONDAY
I went over to KK’s to drop off a gift card that EP had accidently left over our house during Amanda’s party. It took a while to find it (and we had gone on vacation in the mean time). I had not seen him in a while, so we spent a lot of time yakking. He had a hedge trimmer accident last Friday, so two of his fingers were really messed up, but hopefully he will merely be scarred and not something worse. Last Friday I was going to rent a hedge trimmer to get rid of the bush-thing in front that was clogging our sewer lines, but Amanda axed that idea due to the wet weather and the steep slope. Prescient of her.

I visited the new preschool we may/probably will be taking LK to really soon now. It seemed nice. There are pros and cons to moving, and I don’t have a burning desire to move him (and I have a lot of inertia in my life), but Amanda thinks it will be a better place (not that his current place is bad).

2011 JUN 24 : FRIDAY
Amanda went to the residency graduation yesterday, so I allowed the Kai to choose what he wanted for dinner. The choice: sushi at the “old place”. Translation: Blue C Sushi. “Not the one with the train”. Translation: The Sushi House, a kaiten sushi place we ate at in Banff on vacation.
That was all well and good, but it is now obvious that I should not take him there again as he can pack the sushi in nowadays. It would be cheaper (and better) to just go to Wabi Sabi close by in Columbia City and get him a kids bento box. Blue C is not exactly cheap; its main benefit is that one can start eating immediately.

2011 JUN 25 : SATURDAY
After the Kai’s last gymnastics class of the season (he got a cerificate! woot!), we headed out to Remlinger Farm in Carnation to meet up with a few of the Kai’s classmates as a couple of them are moving to different preshools. I actually had no idea they had a small amusement park there; previously I had only been there for u-pick fruits and vegetables. I thought it was OK, but the kiddies found it fun.

After a short time back home, Amanda and progeny went to a party up north with her former residency buds (HK and AW were visiting from New Mexico for the weekend). I went to a party in Redmond with a bunch of my MSE classmates at HN’s boyfriend’s place. It was fun.

predator

// 2011.06.22 22:18 //

Baby piglet walked out of the house this afternoon and within five minutes came back with a mouse in her jaws. I had originally thought is was a toy mouse, but she was acting too pleased with herself. It was obvious when she dropped it under the dining room table and poked it whereupon the mouse would squeak.

I picked up the mouse with a paper towel. It’s eyes were tightly closed and it was quivering, perhaps preparing itself for the next life. I put it on the other side of the fence. A bit later it had sat up and seemed to be licking itself intently. And even later it was gone.

Baby piglet consoled herself with her knit octopus toy.

Otherwise, today I went to the dentist. It was an uneventful cleaning, but I thought my gums would have been in better condition considering I had flossed practically ever day for the past six months (a first!).

I took the Kai to the farmer’s market after I picked him up from school. We saw our old neighbor HS and her progeny. LK got some free peanuts from Alvarez Farm. We got some asparagus, apple granita for the Kai, a baguette, a “blondie” cookie, raspberry pepper jelly (expensive stuff), and a half flat of strawberries. We relaxed in the park before heading back home to meet Amanda who had biked to work.

After dinner, we headed out to the Seattle Farm Cooperative warehouse to get some layer feed. We talked to one of the people there about whether or not Red was a roo, but it is all still inconclusive.

Lot of stuff has been happening. We were in the Canadian Rockies for over a week. I did take notes, so hopefully I will recap the trip. Maybe.

dinner and a movie

// 2011.05.23 11:31 //

I biked to Seattle U on Thursday to see how long it takes as I really should start biking there especially since it is still light outside (kinda) around 9pm when I am coming back. It was fun, but I forgot to bring my lock, so I could not really stop once I got there. I did meet Amanda for lunch; we just ate outside of one of the Harborview cafes. One of her coworkers (whom I guess was not in clinic that day) asked where we “dumped the kid!” and Amanda replied “Hey, we’re on a date!”

Amanda and I had went on another date on Saturday… dinner and a movie! I don’t exactly recall the last time we did so. It was a surprise to me (perhaps to Amanda as well?), so we were not prepared for dinner reservations somewhere, and a few restaurants I do want to do to eventually did not have any openings. We ended up taking the train downtown and had dinner at at Pintxo in Belltown; as their name suggests, they serve pintxos which are kinda like Basque tapas. Tasty!

After dinner, we went to the top of Pacific Place to check out a movie; Amanda’s mom had given us a couple of tickets that she had purchased at a discount from work. We were not too inspired by the movies. I was leaning towards Priest (in 3D!) but Amanda did not want to shell out another $1.50 new movie surchage plus another $4 3D surcharge. We ended up watching Thor which was also available in 3D but we saw the normal version. It was much better than I thought it would be; we were both entertained.

While all this was going on, the Kai was also on a dinner-and-a-movie date with his grandmother. They went to Red Robin and then saw Rio.

On Sunday, we retrieved the Kai when we all met up at St. Dames for bfast.

That afternoon, our sewer backed up and started spewing crap (literally) down the front slope of our house. I suppose we are fortunate that it is not backing up into the house; that’s happened to me before and is far less fun. It looks like it is coming up a now unused drainpipe where a gutter used to drain (though not anymore).

I did manage to get someone in to hopefully take care of it (i.e. hopefully it is just clogged as opposed to the sewer line needing repair). I am waiting for them now for an 11am-1pm appointment. I suppose as always they will show up at 1.
