sunday recap

A blah day. ARK was still on call until 5pm, so I basically stayed at home all day with the kiddies for most of the time. Walking the 25ft or so to dump trash and recycling was probably the farthest I had been from the house. And dealing with the chickens, but the henhouse is closer. The morning was basically filled with watching the kiddies and cleaning up the kitchen. Fortunately, the kiddies entertained themselves enough that I only had to intervene every two to five minutes instead of exerting constant vigilance over them. As for the kitchen, I did my usual weekly more thorough cleaning… completely clean the stove, hood, baffle filters, front of cabinets, etc. etc. etc. … that I normally do during the week. I did not clean the stove last week for some reason that escapes me now, so it was extra dirty. So, ya, that was the deal between 0830-1230 (which also included me fixing lunch for the kiddies). Also did random other cleaning. Finally cleaned out the fireplace, for example.

ARK came back around 1pm or so while I was putting J down for a nap. She took LK to his Mandarin lessons. I thought about napping as I had not slept much last night as the mexican food for dinner yesterday made my stomach unhappy. I had also hoped to exercise if ARK had come back early enough at the gym or running (which didn’t happen), so I had not really eaten anything, so I was feeling non-energetic. Instead I twittered about the house cleaning and organizing more cause it never ends. I also twittered about on the computer.

ARK managed not to get called in, so she was able to bring LK back around 1545 (I don’t know what the alternate plan would have been). She dropped him off and went with her mother and J to the women’s only swim at the community center. LK wanted to play this Lego game he made up himself, but the rules were pretty incomprehensible to me and it seemed like he was making everything up as he went along. So that was a little irritating. I convinced him to play chess instead, which was fun for a while until we neared the endgame and LK was obviously losing. He doesn’t take losing/failure well. We stopped the chess and I let him recover his composure by playing video games while I spent time in the resting squat position and twiddled on my phone.

The rest of the family came home at 1745. ARK made a tasty risotto for dinner while I did more house stuff. It was a typically evening after that. ARK dealt with the evening kid stuff while I cleaned up the kitchen and whatnot. Definitely a lot of kitchen cleaning today. I put J to sleep while ARK stayed with LK.

I finally tried to exercise after J was asleep by doing my usual 100 pushups, 200 situps, and 300 squat routine (usual for when I don’t go to the gym and can’t run). My left shoulder gave out after about 6 minutes in, so I had to abort, cause it wasn’t happening. CGO 14.5 clearly has some lasting effects.

I was going to make a martini as a nightcap, but I decided that was too much effort. I am having some sake instead while I repeatedly watch the honey badger video. I should try to write a haiku before bed.

rainy saturday

// 2014.03.29 21:58 //

It’s been the wettest March ever in Seattle.

ARK is on call all weekend, so we got up early and took the kiddies to her mom’s place. She went off to the UWMC to round while I borrowed her mom’s car to go the gym. The workout was on the wet side. Aftwards I went home to shower, even though I was very very wet from the rain, and then returned to BK’s place.

LK was going to go to AF’s birthday party, but we still need to get her a present. I took him down to Columbia City and we went to Retroactive Kids. I ended up getting her a kit that let one make a felted maneki-neko. I was going to get more kits, but they were a little pricey and that might be overkill for a six-year-old.

I then returned to BK’s place and we basically relaxed there with the kiddies until ARK joined us for lunch. I basically had three veggie burgers of various types while everyone else had grilled cheese or quesadillas.

ARK then took LK to the party while everyone else napped.

We all went to dinner at Huarachitos. I decided to not get the fish tacos that I have gotten every other time I had been to the place (and its predecessor that burned down) and go fish fajitas instead. ARK and her mom got the Plate of Nations special which was quite a lot of food for $25 (chicken mole crepes, green chili tamales, chili rellenos, plus accouterments). The fajitas were good, but the fish tacos are still the best there.

LK wanted to spend the night with his grandmother, so he is over there now. J is sleeping. ARK should be sleeping, because one does not know what the call night holds.

workout 20130329

// 2014.03.29 21:37 // , ,

400m run
100 double-unders
800m run
75 double-unders
1200m run
50 double-unders
1600m run
25 double-unders

39:20

Excluding standard lifts, I believe this is the first workout that I have repeated at the gym. I did it over five minutes faster than I did last September. It is always good to be improving. I think the main reason for my better time is that I am much better at the double-unders, although I am still far from proficient. While warming up, JD was giving us various tips and whatnot, and he commented that he always see people “start to panic” and start leaning forward, jumping too high, scrunching their shoulders, and then messing up. After a few warm-up attempts, R told me, “you look like you’re panicking!” Thanks, R. I also think my cardio is better, not much, but better. It was raining pretty hard, though, so that definitely slowed everyone down, and there were many puddles to dodge. And their was the sloshing socks which made running and jumping rope even more fun. So, given the conditions, I probably could have gone even faster.

I did notice that I could run faster than I do. I believe I ran each 400m split on the 1600m section I ran faster than any of the previous ones, simply because I tried to lengthen my stride and turn my legs over quicker. It was more tiring, but not all that much. I definitely should get out of my normal ambling run that I have been doing.

RP asked me today while we were squatting “Do you always wear cat t-shirts?” Me: “Well, I do like cats a lot”.

CGO 14.5

for time:
21-18-15-12-9-6-3
thrusters 95#/65#
burpees-over-bar

28:45

I knew beforehand that this one was going to suck. If this was a normal workout, I definitely would not have done the thrusters at 95#, but since I was registered for the Open, I did not really have the choice. The annoying thing about thrusters is that I find the front squat part rather trivial, but the overhead press part, even with the momentum coming out of the squat, is rough. At least, doing 80+ reps is rough. I tried to break up the rounds into three parts (e.g. 7×3, then 6×3, then 5×3, etc.) but I could not keep that up and eventually just did the thrusters in sets of three. The burpees themselves weren’t so bad, I really used them to get my heart rate down from the thrusters.

All in all, this was the hardest workout I have done in a while. My shoulders locked up maybe thirty minutes after I finished, and I could not raise my arms (right was much worse than left). I had an unpleasantly funny moment when I could not get my cold sweat filled shirt off when I got home. I had to use my left arm to move my right arm around.

Three hours later, my right shoulder is feeling better. At least I can raise it a bit. ARK is very concerned. “You only have catastrophic health insurance! It might cost $10000 if you get admitted to the hospital!” She is especially concerned with my kidneys since I am on an ACE inhibitor. I am not that concerned at the moment. ARK: “Well, what do I know? It’s not like I am a highly trained health professional, right?”

My time sucked. I did finish though. I basically kept a constant pace throughout, mainly because I wanted to be sure I did not completely exhaust my shoulders during the workout and then not be able to finish.

10 minutes of squat

// 2014.03.27 23:17 //

I have been doing ten minutes of squatting each day this month. Basically that means staying in a “resting” squat position (hip crease below knees and heels on the ground) for ten minutes. They don’t have to be consecutive. I had started doing them with shoes or boots on and found them to be pretty easy; I could stay squatting for thirty straight minutes. I did get the light-headedness, though, and some soreness in the hip flexors. A week or so ago I dropped the footwear and started doing them barefoot which really cranked up the difficulty as the slight rise in the heels makes a big difference. Possibly an ankle flexibility issue. I could only do one or two minutes at a time. And I needed a minute or so to warm up. And my hip flexors really did not like it.

Tonight I managed to do ten minutes straight. Woo. Guess I am getting better.
