saturday recap

2014 APR 05 : SATURDAY

I went to the gym at 8am. ARK came at nine with the kiddies. I look J to Tin Umbrella to get a badly needed caffeine shot for myself. We then returned to the gym to wait for ARK to finish her workout. The kiddies were kinda crazy; I tried to burn off their energy by making them do burpees. LK did ten before he got bored. J did them erratically. She was not big on the jumping up and clapping part.

After exercise, ARK went with the kiddies and her mother to Costco. I went to the townhouse to do landlord things. The main thing was to clean out the dryer vent. Unfortunately, when I managed to get up in to attic, I found out that the vent had become undone and the dryer lint had been spewing out all over the attic. That can’t be good. After wrestling about trying to get the stuff back together, I gave up and went to Lowes for additional supplies. Basically, I had problems getting everything back together because it was obviously assembled in a different order and it was no longer physically impossible to reassemble. I was also overheating and had breathed in too much fiberglass and lint. I had hoped to find a different angled connector or possibly use a flexible tube, but that didn’t happen. I ended up getting another angled connector, some metal tape to reseal everything assuming I got everything back together, and some tools to clean out the lint from the piping. And some masks so that I would not breathe in crap and get cancer.

I finally was able to get the vent stuff back together and sealed it. I still have to actually clean it out, but that will wait for another day. I also have to fix the mount straps that were holding everything up; they have come undone for some reason which perhaps is why everything fell apart. And all that lint in the attic should be removed. But, yes, another day.

I also fixed the townhouse doorbell. That was easy.

We had a date night again. ARK’s mother took J while our neighbor S watched LK… just like our last date night. And just like our last date night, we went to Luc. Their four course menu du jour was pretty much the same as last time (which some minor alterations), so we ordered off their normal menu. I got a Luc’s Mule (vodka, ginger ale, lime, cassis, plus other stuff) cause it was a date night and why not booze it up. Speaking of booze, we got a carafe of their house red (which supposedly is specially made for them). It was good. We got a cheese plate plus these fried potato puffy things that were served with a mayo/harissa sauce. I’m not sure how they made them (they looked like thin-walled fried potato torpedoes), but they were awesome. ARK got a gnocchi thing while I got moules frites which is basically mussels with french fries. It was very good, and something I would not normally get. ARK got a s’more ice cream for dessert while I got salted caramel ice cream with caramel sauce on top.

The food was good and still a good bargain relatively. Unfortunately, we have exhausted their veggie options, so we can’t go back until they change their menu again.

workout 20140405 – OHS/gymnastics tabata

// 2014.04.05 15:42 // , ,

Overhead Squat 6×3
125# max

8 round tabata (20s/10s):
handstands
hollow body rock
superhero rock

I was sharing a rack with Robert, so I did not really push the weight since there was only 20 minutes to do the lifts. 135# is my max anyway, although I felt I could have gotten past that considering how 125# felt.

The tabatas were OK. I have not been able to hold handstands very long recently. I suck at the rocks, but I guess I have to do them to get better.

It was not all that taxing a workout though otherwise.

workout 20140403 – sprint/jumps/static hold

// 2014.04.04 07:00 // , ,

5 rounds 3 minutes each:
200m run
box jumps 24″

count total box jumps: 146

3x max l-sits: 0:35s on boxes

I was glad to have this kind of workout because my shoulders still feel funky.

We actually had a bit of rest between rounds (maybe 30 seconds) as we updated our totals and reset outside the gym for the next round. It was not as exhausting as I thought it would be, but that might be because it is hard to go all out on the box jumps without risking wiping out. Which I did during one round. After the runs RB would be saying how great I was doing by getting back after 50 seconds, and I was thinking, “damn, I used to be able to run 400m in that time”.

The l-sits were painful as always, especially after 15 minutes of running and jumping. I did the first on the rings, and failed after only 10 seconds. Although I could have gone longer had I just kept my knees up (which was allowed) … I had my legs straight and perpendicular to the ground. The other two I did on boxes. Eh, I should’ve done better.

I used my new shoes for the first time: New Balance MT10v2 Minimus Trail Running Shoe. I had wanted to get another pair of shoes I could use in the gym that would also be good for running. My Nike Free’s are wearing out and I believe I tweaked my knee while wearing them as they aren’t built for laternal stability. The more popular cross training shoes aren’t really all that great in the running department. These guys I can also use lifting, but I already have lifting shoes for serious weight. They are perfectly fine, even though I got 2E width shoes they still seem narrow. My FiveFingers are still much better overall, but they were less than ideal at jumping rope, box jumps, etc. I think the New Balance ones will be better for longer runs (over a mile), especially since I can wear socks or not with them, but we will see.

workout 20140401

// 2014.04.01 21:10 // , ,

20 minutes to find max hang snatch – 105#
2x500m row – 4 minutes rest between – 1:43, 1:50
100 hollow body rocks

I always find doing Olympic lifts, or parts of Olympic lifts, during regular classes difficult as the there is usually not enough time for my creaky old body to warm up. Today, the technique lesson was part of the 20 minutes, so there was probably less than 15 minutes to actually lift. the 105# was a PR, tho.

The 1:43 was also a PR for a 500m row. I guess it was a successful workout, even though it didn’t feel like one. I did feel like I could’ve gone even faster on the first attempt.

I definitely tweaked my knee doing the overhead squats and box jumps a few workouts ago. My right one hurt all day.
