book inventory

One thing that I have been meaning to do for a long long time is inventory my books. I have made various attempts throughout the years, but nothing really came of them. Recently, I have been fooling around with some online sites, and I finally will get this done. Of course, I have maybe one quarter the number of books I had ten years ago, so this task is a lot easier now.
I fiddled with Shelfari as it is local and looked very Web 2.0-like, but I decided to go with LibraryThing instead. I even paid for the “lifetime” membership. I am not too concerned about the actual “lifetime”-ness of the site, because I can export my data for backup purposes. Not all the metadata, but enough for my purposes.
It would cost a lot of money to replace all of this stuff. Good thing it is insured. And now I will have documentation.
Inventory / tagging / data cleanup is still in progress, but over half of my books are in. Scary to thing I used to have much much more. I don’t buy many books now. They seem to be more expensive (relatively) nowadays, so I just things from the library.
