apple picking

amanda had to go round at the children’s hospital this morning and had yet another bad day there (there’s apparently a lot of tension there for some unknown reason and the staff is more prone to yell and scream at everyone, i guess), but we still had our traditional brunch at solid grounds afterwards with erika and dave. we actually stayed there quite a while talking and whatnot; perhap we should have freed up the table sooner. katy dropped by as well, and we spent much time discussing what she should bring for her upcoming trip to italy. i found it amusing that when i travel i am almost always going hiking or the like and know immediately what i would pack for such an occasion, but for other adventures, i would have to think more. dave paid for brunch, and amanda said that we could never stop going because the brunch payments between all the varied participants would get all out of whack.
after brunch, dave, erika, and katy went off to buy more suitable clothing for katy’s trip, while amanda and i met up with lainie (a second year er resident) to go apple picking at becker farms. the place was kinda funny… it was very amusement park like with lots of little buildings and signs for various little things. there was a lot of stuff there: many playground type things, theatre type place, pond, farm animals running everywhere, a petting zoo type place, bakery, gift shop, etc. . amanda and lainie got some hot cider, but they both had to dump then as there were many bees about who apparently love hot cider.
eventually, we got a ride on a tractor thing to the picking part of the orchard. lainie and amanda were quite nondiscreet about their apple tasting and dumping of half-eaten apple carcasses, but that kind of thing is par for the course for u-pick places. we picked half a bushel of empire and golden delicious apples and also picked a few pumpkins.
we ate dinner at romeo and juliets on hertel. i guess since its a new month we felt flush with decretionary cash since our budget reset, but we just had a light dinner with an antipasti plate, salad, and soup. we got into a funny discussion with our waiter sean (or shawn or shaun) about the weird effect of married people only associating with other married people (and conversely, single people primarily associating with single people). we had also gotten into this discussion with lainie earlier, as amanda and i seemed to not reaaly follow this empirical observation, as many people have stated that we don’t “act married”… whatever that means. our waiter did not realize that we were married; he said that we stilled seemed to be full of “youthful exuberance”. i guess losing that is a indicator of marriage for him. but then, we did not realize that he was married as well, and apparently he just had a baby but was still exhuberantly youthful. we all agreed that having kids definitely might radically change one’s social life (among other things).
that previous paragraph was a bit nonlucid; sorry about that. i should be more expansive with my discussion, but it is kinda late. i am not doing the discussion justice. maybe later.
our waiter gave us free pineapple cake. i guess he liked us since no one else got any cake.
anyways, after dinner we watched the thing. another great movie. i don’t know if amanda appreciated it, but it probably was not as scary as she was expecting. amanda promptly fell asleep afterwards.
we have been watching a lot of movies recently because we got a trial subscription to netflix. it seems to be working out ok, but i do not know if we will continue the subscription, which basically lets up have three dvds out at anytime for $20 per month all without the hassle of going to the video store. i do not know if we will be able to watch enuf movies (it looks like we would be able to rent 9-12 a month if we watch them immediately) to make it really worth it, but amanda seems to find watching movies relaxing whilst studying.
