trip report: day 04

30 JUNE 2003 MONDAY
we’re back at the campsite after a relaxing day. amanda has started the fire, and we are both partaking of big rock brewery’s traditional ale… good stuff… to bad they don’t export to new york. amanda is violating a tofu pup even as i write this entry. we have having tofu dogs, corn, and potato chips for dinner. the pup doesn’t look too happy with that stick up its ass. it looks all blistered from its torment in the fire, but amanda is eating it viscously anyway. she’s going to torment at least three more!
ok, i’ve finished a beer… it’s time for my torture sessions with the hapless tofu pups.
oh, no! amanda has lost a pup to the fire! it took the easy way out. amanda is furious and is taking her anger out on a new tofu dog.
dinner is over; ’twas yummy. aside… corn costs $0.59 here! crazy. but our two ears were very sweet and tasty.
today we got up (after a very windy and rainy evening with me surviving sleeping bag theft from amanda). we had bfast at a diner in banff (joe btfsplk’s diner)… i had an omelette with mushrooms, cheese, and green peppers while amanda had two scrambled eggs, toast, and hashbrown patty. we went back to the valley of the ten peaks and did a short hike to the two consolation lakes. it was pretty easy. amanda hung out at the foot of the lake while i went exploring. we ended up only seeing one lake as the other was on the other side of the lake over a big ridge, and amanda did not want to cross the rock field, snowfields, climb the ridge, and then run into mr. and mrs. grizzly bear. they were definitely around as we had passed many piles of grizzly scat on the way to the lower lake.
on the way back to moraine lake (where the trailhead was), we finally went up the really big pile of rocks at the end of the lake (which no one knows how it got there) and ate lunch. amanda taunted me for feeding the nutcracker that was following us around. it was much colder and windier than yesterday, and it looked very ominous armound sentinel pass; good thing we hiked it yesterday.
on our way back down to lake louise, we ran into a massive traffic jam… perhaps some car had an accident or ran off the road. regardless, we were motionless for a long time. we were going to do another hike, but we bailed due to the time lost in the traffic jam and went back to banff and the grocery store (safeway, which we always have trouble finding even tho banff is very small), and, of course, the beer and wine store.
