telco inefficiency

it took a shocking amount of time (45 minutes) to get local phone service in brooktondale set up. at least, it doesn’t seem like it should take all that time (at least for me anyway). i was hoping to get away with not having a local line, but the new house is out in the sticks in a valley, so cell phone coverage is marginal to nonexistent. given that amanda will not be around very much even when we move from buffalo in the next month, it would be nice to be able to talk when at home… now i usually just call her at work before going home between 9pm and 10pm. the telco does not have a realistic per call plan (pay per minute rather than per call), so i got their unlimited local plan which gets all their features, too. they could not easily tell me what all the taxes and fees would be, so hopefully the monthly bill will be around $35 or so. otherwise, maybe i will go with the local toll plan anyway.
allegedly they have dsl as well at my number, but i find that hard to believe at our address. but i will investigate that later.
amanda and i are spending wads and wads of money on telecommuncations at this point. we were going to combine our cell plans earlier this year, but that got derailed by verizon thinking i owed them some outrageous amount of money on my old line, so i think they just flushed that idea even though they later said sorry, it was our fault. hmm, what to do.
